The Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts
After experiencing visions of the Virgin Mary and instructed by a choir of angels to chart the destiny of war-torn France, a humble peasant girl, 17-year-old Joan of Arc won the confidence of the future king Charles VII by revealing information that only a messenger from God could know. As his newly appointed leader of the French army, she lifted the siege of Orleans and fearlessly won battle after battle to defeat the English and rescue the throne of France. Her capture led to one of the most celebrated trials in history with its charges of witchcraft and heresy that resulted in her execution at the stake!
Inspired by his research, Tchaikovsky exclaimed, “What a rich subject!”
